Prince Maximilian, Chancellor of Germany, contacted Woodrow Wilson in October 1918 asking for an armistice. An armistice is an agreement to stop fighting, and it was signed by representatives of France, Britain, and Germany on November 8, 1918, with fighting to end on November 11, 1918.
The document was signed in Ferdinand Foch's private railcar in Compiègne, France, north of Paris.
Signatories:
- Matthias Erzberger, head of the German delegation
- German Admiral Ernst Vanselow
- German Count Alfred von Oberndorff of the Foreign Ministry
- German General Detlof von Winterfeldt
- British naval officer Captain Jack Marriott
- British Rear-Admiral George Hope
- First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Rosslyn Wemyss
- Marshal Ferdinand Foch
- French General Maxime Weygand
straight away German troops had to retreat, infact they left so fast that they were returning to Germany without being disarmed formally and still had all their weapons!
It intensified because Germany created an armistice with Argonne Forest.
World War 1 ended on November 11, 1918, at 11:00 a.m. This ceasefire was known as the Armistice of Compiègne and marked the end of the fighting on the Western Front.
Western front
On the Western Front in WWI, trench warfare was the main type of fighting. The war lasted from autumn 1914 until spring 1918. I hope that answered your question...!
The Eastern Front had trenches like the Western Front, but it was so large that the fighting was more mobilised, especially in Ukraine. German Uhlans and Ukranian/Russian cavalry were able to move around and fight each other.
Fighting stopped on the Western Front (WWI) on that day. An armistice was signed by the Germans and the Allies at Compiegne (in a railway carriage).
Yes, but it was a relatively nice railraod car, seeing as it transported the French general in charge of action on the Western Front.
The Armistice of WWI was signed into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the Year of our Lord 1918, ending hostilities on the Western Front. The name was changed from "Armistice Day" to "Remembrance Day" after WWII.
it make fighting more intense on the western front.
commemorated every year on 11 November to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning---the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918.

Armistice Day (which overlaps with Remembrance Day and Veterans Day) is celebrated every year on 11 November to commemorate the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germanyat Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning—the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. While this official date to mark the end of the war reflects the ceasefire on the Western Front, hostilities continued in other regions, especially across the former Russian Empire and in parts of the old Ottoman Empire.

Treaty of VersitilesIf I understand your question correctly you are asking what treaty formally ended the war (World War I) in 1918. There was NO treaty that ended the war in that year (1918). There, however, was an armistice (staring 11NOV1918) that ended the fighting on the Western Front, the only remaining front in the war (more about the Eastern Front in a minute) and so ended the war. The terms of surrender were to be worked out later and came to be known as the Treaty of Versialles which was the formal treaty that ended the war. This treaty was signed by the Germans on June 30, 1919 (not sure of date--might want to check that out). So, it was the Treaty of Versialles, which came into effect into 1919 that formally ended the war. The fighting on the Eastern Front (Russia) had ended in March of 1918 when Russia signed a separate peace treaty with Germany thus withdrawing from the war. But this didn't end all the fighting in World War I. The rest of the Allied powers continued fighting until 11NOV1918.
After over four years of Trench Warfare on the Western Front, and the effective blockade of Germany by the Royal Navy, Germany, on the verge of starvation and political collapse, out of the resources necessary to sustain its troops at the front, signed an Armistice with the Allies to take effect on November 11, 1918 at 11:00 A.M. Since that many countries celebrate Armistice Day. The US commemorates it as Veterans Day.
