The Gospel of Mark is now known to have been the first New Testament gospel to have been written, so the answer lies in establishing the approximate date when Mark was written. As all the gospels were originally anonymous and as scholars say it is unlikely that any of the gospels were actually written by eyewitnesses to the mission of Jesus, their authorship did not necessarily take place within a lifetime of Jesus' death on the cross.

There is some evidence that the author of Mark knew Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians, evidence that probably places the first gospel later than the fifties. Partly because of reference to the Roman-Jewish War of 66-73 CE, most scholars now say that Mark's Gospel was written approximately 70 CE. Jesus is then reported as prophesying that he would return on clouds of glory within the lifetimes of his disciples, a prophecy that did not come true. Since it is not possible for Jesus to prophesy something that is not true, this second prophecy was actually an authorial addition. The two prophecies are linked, so if one is an authorial addition, then both are authorial additions. The author was writing at the time of the War, and therefore around 70 CE. The gospels now known as the Gospels of Matthew, Luke and John followed over the ensuing decades, substantially based on the content of Mark's Gospel.

Recent evidence points to the Gospel of Mark being written soon after the Apostles left Jerusalem on their ministry mission in circa 40 AD.

How long after Jesus' death were the Gospels of Matthew Mark Luke and John written?

Most biblical scholars accept that the Gospel According to St Mark was the first written of the four canonical Gospels. Mark's Gospel was written in Greek, and there is ample evidence that Matthew's Gospel and Luke's Gospel were based on Mark's Gospel. St John's Gospel appears to have been based on Luke's Gospel, but the author clearly also knew Mark's Gospel and copied some material from it. Ian Wilson (Jesus: The Evidence) says that it can come as a shock to discover that no-one can even be sure who wrote the gospels. Nevertheless much scholarly study has gone into establishing approximately when they were written.Mark's Gospel was written in the late 60s or very early in the 70s CE, thus around 40 years after the most commonly accepted dates for the death of Jesus.Matthew's Gospel was written after Mark's, but before Luke's Gospel. It is generally considered to have been written in the 80s CE. This means that it was probably written more than 50 years after the death of Jesus.Luke's Gospel is generally considered to have been written in the 90s CE, but could well be from early in the second century. It comes some 70 years after the death of Jesus, and long after all his contemporaries were dead.John's Gospel is generally considered to have been written a little after Luke, and a date early in the second century is probable. Once again, this Gospel is dated more than 70 years after the generally accepted date of the crucifixion.

What verse in the bible tells how long Jesus lived on earth?

Jesus' age is never explicitly given. The various gospels give some details, but these are not sufficient to determine a single date of birth and date of death, instead giving a range of ages (33 to 35 years old normally, but possibly outside this).

How long after the death of Christ was the Bible written?

The gospels tell us that Jesus was crucified during the time of Pontius Pilate, who governed Judea between 26 CE and 36 CE. Tradition generally holds that Jesus died either 30 CE or 33 CE.The first gospel to be written, the Gospel According to St. Mark, is believed by most scholars to have been written around 70 CE. Matthew followed, probably in the eighties, then Luke and John. The Epistles of St. Paul are generally believed to have been written in the fifties, but may have been somewhat earlier. Hebrews and possibly some of the other epistles may also have preceded the New Testament gospels.Of course, the Old Testament was written long before the time of Jesus. The New Testament was written within approximately 15 - 70 years of Christ's death, within the lifetime of the disciples and their close associates.

Which book in the Bible tells of the life death and resurrection of Jesus?

A:The four New Testament gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, tell of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The first gospel to be written was Mark's Gospel, but this originally ended at verse 16:8, with the young man telling the women that Jesus was risen and they fled in terror, telling no one. The "Long Ending" (verses 16:9-20) was added long afterwards to provide the necessary resurrection appearances. Additional Answer:Chapter 53 of the Book of Isaiah is all about the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Other books from Genesis to Malachi, speak or allude to Him. The risen Christ spoke to the the men on the road to Emmaus in Luke 23:27 verifying that beginning in Moses and all the prophets spoke of Him.

Why did the first Catholics ignore many books written by Jesus' disciples thus making the Bible incomplete?

There were many gospels and 'Acts' written over time, but most of them were written by Gnostic Christians and were too different from the teachings of the branch of Christanity that came to dominate in the later part of the second century, and therefore had the privilege of defining the New Testament. The four gospels we now know were the four that most closely matched its teachings. The influential early Church Father, Irenaeus stated that there must be four and only four gospels, just as there are four corners of the earth, and supported the inclusion in the New Testament of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.None of these books was really written by disciples of Jesus, although they bore the names of various apostles. Ian Wilson (Jesus: The Evidence) says that it can come as quite a shock to discover that no one can even be sure who wrote the four gospels in the New Testament. Despite the versions printed in our Bibles long having borne the names Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, these names are mere attributions and they are most unlikely to have been the real authors.

How did Caesar Augustus feel about condemning Jesus to death?

Caesar Augustus died in 14 CE and was succeeded by Tiberius, who lived until 37 CE. So Augustus was long dead at the time attributed to the death of Jesus. There is no evidence that Tiberius ever knew about Jesus being condemned to death. The gospels say that the local Roman governor was reluctant to condemn Jesus to death, but some say that this was said in order for the gospels not to appear anti-Roman.

Did Judas see the resurrected Jesus?

A:In Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians, written long before the first of the gospels, the risen Jesus appeared to the twelve (1 Cor 15:3-8) which can only mean that for Paul, Jesus was not betrayed by Judas Iscariot. The gospel story required a traitor, and that traitor was Judas Iscariot. In the gospels, when the risen Jesus appeared to the disciples, he appeared to the eleven. It would be inconceivable that the other disciples would have kept Judas in their midst to be seen by the risen Jesus. Now, Judas did not see Jesus.

Was St Andrew a Gnostic?

St. Andrew (brother of Simon Peter) was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus none of whom were gnostics. Scholars generally date the gnostic gopels to the early-mid 2nd century, long after Jesus and the apostles (including St. Andrew) were dead. The gnostic gospels (e.g., gospel of Thomas, etc.) were written by others over a century later.

What are four true historical assertions about Jesus?

AnswerThere is so little genuine historical evidence about Jesus. It is the nature of historical inquiry that the assertions contained in the gospels can not be claimed as historically true, without independent confirming evidence, which does not exist. But the following are true historical assertions:That there were many wandering preachers in Palestine during the first century BCE and the first century CE, making it plausible that Jesus of Nazareth really did exist, as one of these wandering preachersThat many millions of Christians believe that he was the long-awaited Jewish MessiahThat a religion was founded in his nameThat several books of the genre known as 'gospels' were written about Jesus, four of those gospels being placed in the New Testament canon.
