Actually, air pollution (as we know it today) has improved over the last century.

Coal, steel, and industries that burned fossil fuels to produce their products used to emit such heavy smoke and toxins into the air that areas looked covered in fog, but it was vapors of pollution trapped near the ground. This continued at least into the 1970s in many areas. Then, governmental entities enacted Clear Air acts and penalties against polluting industrustries. Some countries though still have considerable pollution (ex. Asian countries) because they still rely on coal, which is one of the most available fuels worldwide.

Historically and currently, though, volcanic eruptions still contribute to air pollution. The summer of 1814 had snow, failed crops, and many deaths because of a volcano that erupted half-way across the world. Volcanic dust can affect large areas, travel on air currents, and affect air quality, weather, and the health of crops and persons.

How does electricity produce pollution?

Electricity does pollution in many ways. It begins pollution at the very beginning when produced in thermal power stations.Electricity doesn't pollute directly, it helps other machines to pollute. For eg: Eletricity is used for many appliances, which may malfunction and catch fire, leading into many other problems. Electricity is one of the cleanest sources of energy. But making the electricity can cause many pollutions. A common method of generating electricity is to burl fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels can cause pollution, but not the electricity. But wasting electricity can lead to burn more fossil fuels to generate it. In small scale, electricity is obtained by chemical reactions in non rechargeable cells. These cells contains Murcury, cadmium and various pollutents. Even in the rechargeable cells when they are inally dumped can cause a huge damage to the environment. But there are various clean methods of generating electricity without the pollution. Generating electricity with fallig water or hydro electricity is one of the clean ways of generating electricity. This is the majour source of electricity used in Sri Lanka. The initial cost is heigher; but in long run, it needs nothing but constantly falling water. Solar cells are also a clean source of electricity. This is good for small scale electricity requirements. Costs a lot, but good in long run. Needs little maintainance and no fuel but Sun Shine.
