The Romans came to Britain nearly 2000 years ago and changed our country. Even today, evidence of the Romans being here, can be seen in the ruins of Roman buildings, forts, roads, and baths can be found all over Britain.
Southern England was conquered within a few months in 43 by Aulus Plautius who landed with four legions. The emperor Claudius joined him after the first major campaign, bringing reinforcements and war elephants He stayed there for 16 days.
Northern England was conquered in 78 by Agricola, who was sent there by the emperor Vespasian (who had been one of the generals in the first conquest and took over the West Country). This was also a quick campaign.
The conquest of Wales was more difficult. It begun in 48 and took 30 years. Welsh resistance was tough and it was aided by the mountainous terrain.
Britannia is an allegorical figure for (or personification of) Britain, often shown seated with a lion at her feet, as on the 50 pence coin. She was first invented by the Romans 2,000 years ago and is seen as the goddess of war, and passion. Britannia has been on the back of our fifty pence coins since 1672 but won't be for long thanks to a new government campaign for a new design. So, if you don't want to break the tradition, please sign my petition, in association with THE GUARDIAN to save our Britannia! From the date of the "invasion" of Claudius in 43 AD to the present, it would be 1,967 years ago that the Romans invaded Britain. But this is the official date. The Romans had a presence in Britain long before Claudius.
