Hurricane Katrina formed on August 23, 2005 and dissipated on August 31 of the same year. It began as Tropical Depression Twelve of the season and caused billions of dollars in damage to become the costliest storm in Atlantic hurricane history.
Hurricane Katrina became a tropical storm in the Bahamas on August 23, 2005 and lost tropical storm strength on August 30, after twice making landfall in the US.
Winds and storm surge affected New Orleans for about 2 days, August 29 and 30, 2005. The flooding began that day and the water was not removed from some areas for about 3 weeks thereafter, because the levees had to be repaired. A few areas in eastern New Orleans were reflooded by the storm surge from Hurricane Rita on September 23, 2005.
