Britain was sparsely settled about 11,500 years ago by people similar in structure to Homo sapiens. These people had more sophisticated tools than their predecessors and lived in permanent settlements.

The oldest stone age tools found in the United Kingdom date back about 700,000 years, but no human bones nor traces of human settlements were found with the tools, which may have been made by Homo antecessor, an earlier human subspecies. Hand axes and other flint tools have been found in Sussex from around 500,000 years ago at a site where human bones were found to be those of Homo heidelbergensis.
