Most people find that they are reasonably comfortable after a couple of months. The nicotine leaves your system within 24 hours, unless you are using replacement therapy (which we highly recommend -- the patch in particular, since it does not support the oral habit).

It is the readjustment of your brain to living without foreign stimulation that takes a long time. Experts believe that it never completely recovers, because a very few cigarettes years later can result in a full-blown addiction very rapidly.

There are habits that take a long time to get over, as well, such as reaching for a cigarette at certain times: on the phone, after a meal, with a drink, while driving, etc. This writer was appalled to find himself reaching toward his breast pocket for a smoke during an argument with his wife -- more than 10 years after he had completely quit.

Perhaps the most important advice we can give is to keep in mind that EVERY reason you come up with for having a smoke is simply an excuse to feed your addiction. There is no good reason. The weight gain can be dealt with by exercise, and depression and other emotional symptoms, if present, can be supported by Nicotine Anonymous and counseling if needed.

It may get worse for a while, with zits and stuff. But it should look clearer and fresher from two or three months after you quit smoking. Just keep it clean and give it time.

It depends on how long you have been smoking, if you've been smoking for a few weeks then it might take back another few weeks to get better when you stop smoking it starts to get better.

It will depend hoe long someone smoked for. Lungs will usually start to repair themselves after a year. However, it will always depend on the person.

The effects of smoking on lungs?

Smoking is never good for the lungs, and that is true no matter what it is that you are smoking. The smoke coats the lung surface and makes it dirty; it is difficult for lungs to clean themselves. Coughing, difficulty breathing, lung cancer, and emphysema are all likely to result from prolonged smoking.

If you stop smoking at an early age can your lungs compleatly heal themselves?

That is thought to be the case. The usual estimate is about 15 years for the lungs to repair themselves to the extent they are going to. There may be some residual tendency to develop cancers, and depending on the amount of original damage there may also remain tendencies toward chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or emphysema. However, stopping early is far better than stopping later.
