the lifespan of a leatherback turtle is unknown due to the fact that they remain far out in the ocean. the males never return to land but the females lay their eggs on open beaches. this is also the reason for the lack of knowledge about the exact number of leatherback turtles remaining in the wild. in captivity leatherback turtles live for approx. 50-60 years.
