Hard to say as it depends on the battery and how good it is. A good battery can sit for 6 months and easily still start a car and 1 year is not out of the question.

Charge and check your battery. Charging systems in these bikes are notoriously not amazing. Nighthawks have electronic ignitions which controls idle speed automatically. I.e. if the battery power isn't there, theres no idle = bike dies. Might want to look into a new voltage regulator if problem is persistant. Or, just use a battery tender frequently. Hope that helps. You didn't say what year it is but earlier models also had an external voltage regulator that could fail. I would drive it to an auto parts store and let them test the charging system. They will do this service at no cost.
