Voluntarily, about a week I think is the record. But I did see this show on National Geographic once about a very rare sleeping disorder. The show told the story of a man, a high-school Clarinet teacher, who gradually lost the ability to fall asleep. After about six sleepless months he finally lay down for a permanent rest, but not before such a lack of sleep deteriorated his body and spirit completely.

Sleep deprivation has sometimes been self-imposed to achieve personal notoriety in the context of record-breaking stunts. One such record belonged to Randy Gardner, who stayed awake for 264 hours (eleven days).

A person should sleep at least 8 hours regardless of the age in a day. That means a person can stay up 16 hrs in a day. Staying up more than 16 hrs in a day for once in a while is ok but it will affect the immune system if does for prolong period of time.
