I've heard that it can take some people 3 or more months for things to settle down. But there are things that your doctor can do to help you if your symptoms become unmanagable like mine. From my personal experience it was about 4 weeks.
I got mine inserted on August 13, 2012 and didn't bleed for about three weeks. Then the spotting started. It is now November 20th and I haven't had one day that I haven't been spotting. If you look up reviews you'll find that a lot of women bleed for a year straight before getting fed up and taking it out. Hopefully you'll be different! I'm still waiting and hoping it'll stop.
Most women don't have any periods with a Mirena coil. Others just have a day or two of spotting, which means they can stop buying sanitary towels/tampons and just make do with panty liners. Think of the money they save! I had the coil fitted in 2000 at the age of 41 and have not had a period since, despite the fact that the coil must have run out of progesterone by 2007. I must have gone through the menopause without noticing.
Severe cramps will last up to 48 hours. They feel like after-birth pains or regular period cramping. Slight cramping can be experienced for the first three months.
You can bleed for a couple of days after the insertion of Mirena. This is because it is a foreign substance.
The insertion of an IUD generally takes 10 to 20 minutes. Most of that time is spent in preparing. The insertion itself take just a few minutes.
If you leave the copper IUD in too long, there are no potential health problems. If you leave a hormonal IUD like Mirena in too long, you may not be protected against pregnancy, but there are no other risks.
you are advised to replace the mirena coil after 5 years, though they probably are effective a while longer than that. Leaving it in much longer, will reduce it's effectiveness. If it's left inside way too long, it can get stuck and be harder to remove. If left very long, it can cause blood loss and pain. Last year we removed a coil that had been in place 20 years. This patient complained about brown loss and pain. It is best to replace your coil after about 5 years to avoid problems with removal later, and guarantee it's optimal effectiveness.
If you leave Mirena in place after five years, you could get pregnant. Other than that, there are no side effects.
I had the mirena inserted Oct 2012, but with that I had the bad luck of an ovarian cyst. I used Yaz for 6 months and the cyst disappeared. It made it's appearance again end of 2013 and the cyst had burst. You can use Yaz together with the mirena but not for long term.
It's not recommended. The first cycle after getting the Mirena inserted is the most likely time for the Mirena to be expelled, althouth long-term research has found options like tampons and menstrual cups don't cause expulsion, internal menstrual products mau increase risk of expulsion the first month. It's best to use pads, especially as your flow may be effected by the coil so with a different flow pattern you may risk using too high an absorbency tampon for your flow.

After Mirena is removed, you can expect your hormones and period to return to its previous pattern within 4-6 weeks. Like the birth control pill, Mirena gets out of your system quickly once removed.
mine didnt bleed at all
If you leave a hormonal IUD like Mirena in too long, you may not be protected against pregnancy, but there are no other risks. For instance, if you're menopausal and not concerned about pregnancy, there is no pressing need to remove it.
it depends what you are bleeding from. if you have a nose bleed then it shouldn't bleed for long. if it is a paper cut it shouldn't bleed long. usually if you treat the wound correctly depending on what it is the bleeding should stop within a couple of minuts. it can be bad to bleed for a long time, even fatal
It makes sense to start just before the removal.
I am sorry to hear that you are having a bad time with the Mirena. I too had the Mirena and experienced the same issues as yourself over an 8 month period. It turned out that I had several oversized Fibroids and the Mirena did not help with the stemming of heavy bleeding. I had my Mirena removed and subsequently the Fibroids - best thing I ever did. I know they say it can work instantly or may take a couple of months, but it depends on how long you want to continue with things they way they are. Good luck with which ever dicision you make.
