It depends on the State. I'll use Florida since I live here and I know the laws. You can be jailed up to 10 days for driving while license suspended on a first offense. Typically, a judge would not hand down that harsh of a sentence for a first time (or even second time) offender especially if the driver did not know their license was suspended.
In the State of Florida, driving while license suspended is a criminal misdemeanor as opposed to running a stop sign which is a civil misdemeanor.
If you do a Google search for the driving laws in your state it will more than likely bring you to the DMV's website or the State Legislature website where you will be able to find all of your answers.
But my advice to you, is don't get your license suspended and if it is suspended, don't drive. It will cost you so much more in the end if you get caught or worse if you're at-fault in an accident.
