It really depends on the horse's fitness and health. If you have an unfit horse start with shorter rides and work your way up. If you have a really fit one (I do) depending on how many days a week it is getting work, then you decide how long you want to ride it then. My horse isn't old, he gets worked 6 days a week about 45-1hr per time, sometimes less sometimes a little bit more. But if you have a fit elderly horse, you shouldn't be working it for as much.
