This would depend on a vast number of things: The country in which the misuse occurred, the length of time which the misuse lasted, whether there was any damage to the vehicle, whether there were any individuals affected, either by being struck, destruction of their property, or causing severe delays to the orderly process of said misuse; for example: Did this misuse cause an airline flight to be delayed, causing passengers to miss their onward connections? Did the airline have to pay for overnight accommodation, transport, renewal of any entry/exit visas, cost of meals, and ex-gratia payments as compensation for the delay they incurred. Were there any assets, such as mail, or other time-managed items on board this vehicle that could exacerbate the prevention of contracts being fulfilled as a result of your misuse.
Additionally, the courts would consider what, if any previous convictions you may have on your police record? What is your work record with your employer, was alcohol or drugs involved to prompt your behaviour? And matters may increase if you have been arrested.convicted for similar acts in the past. The court may decide that they've had enough of your failure to respect your community's laws, being respectful to others within your community, and your blatant disregard for the safety and property of others.
On the other end of the spectrum, are there any mitigating circumstances? Were you ill at the time? If so, can your doctor document this by speaking on your behalf. Both a general practitioner or psychiatrist may be helpful. Have you experienced any recent traumas in your life? A death in the family, abuse, illiterate (although in that instance, you probably could not have written this questions), undergoing any documented therapies: Chemotherapy, Day release from a residential mental health facility, etc...those can be of helpful identifiers for the court to consider towards lessening the tariff of your conviction.
In the UK, it is most probable that you would be forced to complete a community service order for approximately thirty days. Or you might receive a fine plus court costs. Or, you might be able to escape with a formal 'caution' from your local constabulary, which would remain on your record for a determined period, then be dismissed.
In america, the fact that it's a government vehicle of some sort...is that a local government, state government, or federal government? There may be specific tariffs for the commission of such an act, most including a custodial sentence.
It is advisable to seek legal advice in this matter.
