Hitler refused to serve in the Austrian military. He avoided mandatory military service in the Austro-Hungarian army, prior to WW1, by moving to Munich. By 1913, he was officially wanted by the Austrian police for avoiding his military service. When war broke out Hitler asked for special permission to enlisted in the Bavarian (German) army rather than the Austrian army. It was granted and Hitler served for the German military for the duration of the war. He served with the 1st Company of the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment, also called the List Regiment, after the original company commander Colonel Von List.

∙ 11y agoHe was in pretty much the entire war. He joined the Bavarian Army in 1914 when the war started, and when the war ended in 1918, he was in a hospital recovering from a poison gas attack.
