King Tawhiao reigned for 34 years, from 25 Jun 1860 until his death on 26 August 1894.
King Tawhiao (1860-1894).
Tawhiao, the second Māori King of New Zealand, lived primarily in the Waikato region, particularly around the town of Ngāruawāhia. He resided at the settlement of Tūrangawaewae, which became the center of the King Movement. Tawhiao's leadership and residence were significant during the conflicts between the Māori and colonial forces in the 19th century.
King Tawhiao's pepeha is "Ko Taupiri te maunga, Ko Waikato te awa, Ko Maniapoto te iwi." This indicates his connection to Mount Taupiri as the mountain, the Waikato River as the river, and the Maniapoto tribe as his people.
Tawhiao was born at Orongokoekoea pā (near Taumaranui).
