Michael Morpurgo says a novel takes him about six months from start to finish. He said he works out the story in his head first and this takes at least a couple of months. After that, he starts the actual writing which takes him 2 to 3 months. Then, it normally takes him up to a month to make any needed revisions.
Well, he has to figure out how the plot is going to unfold, and then he has to write it. After that, the books has to go through a long process of illustration, editing, and publishing. It usually takes a year for this whole process to take place for him. Not to mention, he can't just sit and write all day.
