The best source of information about Noah and antediluvian times comes from The Bible, since most secular sources discount the possibility of a global flood.

Genesis 5 ends with Noah being around 500 years old when he had his 3 sons. Genesis 6 introduces the issue of evil among man, including the crossing of human with the "Sons of God," usually agreed to refer to spiritual beings, presumably demons since the results were evil. Genesis 7 brings the flood; at that time, Noah is said to be 600 years old. Therefore the building of the ark took less than 100 years. (Some place the total time at around 120 years, based on an interpretation of Genesis 6:1. This verse could also mean that this was the expected average lifespan of mankind after the flood.)

We don't know enough about the area in which Noah lived to know whether it was a desert or not. The Ark's landing on Mount Ararat doesn't imply its starting point, especially if the floodwaters literally covered the entire world. Obviously there were trees there, enough for Noah to complete his work. (Note that scientists who accept the idea of a global flood "of Biblical proportions" agree that the antediluvian environment was quite different from that of today.)

As for the locals allowing this, we have very little record of Noah's interaction with the locals, except that Noah was apparently an upstanding citizen.

Through it all, though, it seems quite obvious that, as with everything else, God supplied Noah's needs in terms of supplies and support in ways we may not be able to understand. so 17 years
