WMD's are Weapons of Mass Destruction.
The reason as to why the United States went to war Iraq remains contentious. The official reason given however was to remove a regime that was developing and using the weapons of mass destruction. The Initial Official Justification was that Iraq was creating Weapons of Mass DestructionThe primary reason given by the administration of George W. Bush was that Saddam Hussein, the leader of Iraq, was engaged in the production or acquisition of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). These are nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons (examples are the anthrax letter attacks in the US and the Sarin gas attacks in Tokyo--neither of which had any connection to Iraq). It was suggested that Hussein might provide these weapons to terrorists to attack the US. He had already used chemical weapons sold to him by the US against Iran, and also against Iraqi Kurds. Before the war UN inspectors announced they had found no evidence of WMDs, despite unfettered access. After the war was under way, additional investigation concluded Saddam did not have WMDs.

The UN determined that Iraq had never had WMD
Iraq was expected to honor the sovereignty of Kuwait and if Iraq did not, the United Nations would do what ever was necessary to protect Kuwait. The stances of both Iraq and the UN resulted in the Gulf War.

Because Osama bin Laden terrorized the US. We then got mad and attacked them. Entirely fact-free. Osama was not in, or sponsored by, Iraq. We did not get mad at Iraq. Saddam violated every UN sanction and resolution imposed on him after he abjectly surrendered to the US at the end of the Gulf War. War criminals who do not stay surrendered, get the war renewed. Those who brag that they have WMD get invaded and searched.

The United Nations was trying to keep Iraq from invading Kuwait
UN Inspectors came to Iraq to collect Saddam's vast arsenal (at that time) of chemical and biological weapons. Since that point, Iraq had had to comply with such inspections until the fall of Saddam's regime.
