Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation was accepted by scientific consensus almost immediately after it was proposed, since it accurately predicted the known orbital mechanics of the heavens.

Like other physical "laws" it was assumed that this Law has always been in effect, and always would be, regardless of human knowledge or acceptance of it.

However it has been superseded by the theory of General Relativity, which correctly predicts (among other things) the precession of the orbit of Mercury, which is not accounted for by Newton's Law of Gravity.
