Vera Cruz began a long Marine Corps tradition in the art of Amphibious Warfare, A major role in the siege was played by Colonel Robert E. Lee commanding a battery of artillery naval siege guns for close in support. Within 20 days the Mexican defenders had surrendered. A total of 12,000 members of the landing force had been put ashore with minimal loss of life (13 US killed and 55 wounded and 750 Mexicans including civilians killed.) The attack on Mexico City was ready to begin.
