The official sport of Alaska is Dog Mushing. Dog Mushing was designated the officail sport of Alaska in 1972. In April 2010 Alaska recognized the Alaskan Malamute as the official state dog most likely because its used in the sport.
At a time when dog mushing was fading, a man that lived in Knik, Alaska had the idea of a dog mushing race from Knik to Nome. His name was Joe Redington Sr. often called the father of the Iditarod. He started the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 1973.
John Baker was influenced to become a musher by his deep-rooted connection to the Alaskan culture and the tradition of dog mushing, which is a significant part of life in the North. Growing up in a family that valued the outdoors and the bond between humans and dogs, he developed a passion for the sport. Additionally, the thrill of competition and the challenge of long-distance races, such as the Iditarod, inspired him to pursue mushing as both a sport and a way of life.
