According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, if the employer's accounting department is open and on site, e.g. someone can cut you a check (or, for the rare places, pay in cash) they have to do so immediately. If they're closed but on premises, it must be within 6 hours of the accounting unit's next work day. If they are off-site, it must be made within 24 hours of their next work day.
The employer gets to choose where you get it, which can be the job site, their office, or the last mailing address they have for you. So if they fire you and remove you from the premises, they must pay you then and there, have you paid from their office, or mail you a check that day.
There are certain penalties if they do not comply with these rules.

Each State in the Union has it's own laws. Please check with your state's government or a lawyer.
Almost all employers will require a reference from your last 2 or 3 employers, so if you were to be fired it would cetainly be a problem getting a good reference.
