The length of time any one aircraft remains in service is influenced by many factors. The level of maintenance throughout it's service life is one major one. The better the quality of maintenance, the longer an aircraft can stay in service. The average service life of a jet airliner is approximately 30-35 years. Fighter jets tend to have shorter service lives due to the stress inflicted on the airframe during very sharp turns. However most of the USAF's B-52 long range bomber fleet is over 40 years old and still flying strong.
