I've been told that caterpillars feed for a week to ten days before going into a chrysalis. Then the chrysalis stage last about a week to ten days before emerging as a butterfly (which takes less than a minute!).
EDIT:
Just found it for Monarch Butterflies!

The pupae usually form in morning hours (9-11 am) or later in the day (5-7 pm). So my guess is it only takes a few minutes.
it takes a painted lady butterfly 7 days to hatch because i had some caterpillars i ordered them on-line and when they where in there cocoons they took 7 day to hatch so the answer is it takes 7 days for a painted lady butterfly to hatch and then they will be a lovely butterfly :-)
About A Week
2 or 3 weeks
Until the wings have straightened out and the butterflies can fly. They can fend for themselves then. ^^
Monarch butterfly caterpillars are yellow, black, and white striped and grow to be about two inches long before they pupate.
yes it is true. caterpillars usually eat green leaves and vegetation whereas butterflies eat nectar using their long proboscis
well i suppose it depends how well you keep them.If u give them lots of food and water with lots of room and fun things to do they will survive longer and turn into butterflies quicker. If u give them a little bit less of everything i have previously said then it will take longer to get fatter (they need to be fat to turn into butterflies) and form into butterflies, so they stay caterpillars for longer. If u give nothing, they will starve and die. (so then they don't stay caterpillars and alive for long.)so it depends, follow me on twitter I'm calledMeBunnies
each caterpillar has the same DNA as the butterfly its going to be.
Painted butterfly's live for approximetly 54 days, (thats their whole lifespan, egg - butterfly) but when there a butterfly only 14 days, (2 weeks)
This is really depends on the type of caterpillar you have/seen. (whatever) It can take a few weeks; but before winter arrives, butterflies have the ability to make the process last for months at a time.
Well Spiders eat many things. Spiders eat butterflies, flies, caterpillars, cockroaches, mosquitos, crickets, grasshoppers, gnats, choice beetles, centipedes, love-bugs, and daddy long legs. EVEN MORE!
long
It takes 7 - 11 days for the chrysalis to turn into a butterfly.
Doubtfully, but more importantly, why does it matter. 'Knowing' implies cognitive thought which means a caterpillar would have a capacity by which it could process information, which in humans is a brain. Though a human baby is born with a brain, it is just starting to develop the concept of future so s/he is not aware of becoming an adult.
