It varies from post to post, but your 'dwell' time should be at least 12 months. Some units go longer, others go shorter. As a soldier when you change duty stations, and go to a deploying unit, you are given the option to wave your dwell time. In exchange you receive extra pay for the entire deployment.

Does SEAL team 6 go on long tours in Iraq and Afghanistan or just short missions?

SEAL Team 6, also known as Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), typically deploys on short-term missions rather than long tours. Their missions involve high-profile and high-risk targets, such as counter-terrorism operations and hostage rescues. These missions often require a covert and precise approach that is better suited for shorter periods of time rather than extended deployments.

How long has there been violence between Iraq and al-Qaeda?

The question as posed is awkward. There is no violence between Iraq and al-Qaeda, rather there is violence perpetrated by al-Qaeda in Iraq and countered by the Iraqi Army, the Peshmerga, other militias, and, formerly, the US-led coalition. Al-Qaeda violence started when al-Qaeda members poured into Iraq midway through 2003. It has not ceased.
