Six to nine months, usually. Giving the rubber blades a quick rub with a rag dampened with alcohol will stretch their usable life - a little. You can also extend the life by keeping bugs and sap off the windshield. Finally, keep your car out of direct sunlight too...that helps tremendously.
A windshield wiper is classified as a type of lever, which is a simple machine. It consists of a long arm that pivots on a fulcrum, allowing the wiper blade to move back and forth across the windshield to clear rain or debris. This lever action enables the wipers to exert force over a larger distance, effectively cleaning the surface of the windshield.
The longer blade goes on the driver's side.

Windshield wiper motors have an internal switch that allows a wiper motor to stay running long enough to keep the wipers moving until they reach the "park" position. Once the wiper gets to the park position, the wiper motor is shut off. The internal switch often fails and either the motor will shut off immediately, wherever it is or it will keep running. It sure seems that you need a new wiper motor.

At the bottom of the wiper is a box about 6" long and about 5" wide. This is very hard to open, maybe invest in special tool. It is likely that a cog wheel has come off an not a scredew up wiper motor. It is also quite likely that a cog has worn itself out, in which case you need to replace the cog. The wiper motor is extremely expensive... even used, so I hope there is some noise coming from this box when you try to use your wiper or your wiper is likely banjaxed...
The time is takes for windshield wipers to wear out depends on the quality of them. Some may last anywhere from 5 to 10 years, some may last less than that. They should be replaced when they stop working.
The wiper control relay on your 92 BMW 325i is located in the fuse and relay panel in the engine compartment, drivers side toward the windshield. It is the long relay that is furthest away and to your right as you look down at the panel from over the driver's side fender.
Hi, I had problems with mine also. I found these web pages helpful: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/wiper-motor-problems-115630.html http://elcaminocentral.com/articles/wipers/multi.html There are others but this should get you started. I got a junkyard wiper motor and to check it I just ran small jumper cables to the wiper motor from my car battery. I found that I also had to ground the long grounding strap on the wiper motor to the engine block while I was testing it. Good luck!
The cabin air filter is located directly under the passenger side windshield wiper. All that needs done is a few remove a few screws and the long filer is underneath.
