(OR) you can where it after the positioner, but you don't have to unless needed! The retainer will securely holds the teeth into it's new place. You have to wear during the night. the orthodontist will tell you when to put on you appliance and when to take off. finally at the end after you have worn your braces, postioner, or retainer it will probably take 3 years to have a perfect beautiful smile!
