To make a shelter in the wilderness you need to find a sturdy stick/branch that is relatively straight and about six to eight feet long. Lay one end of this stick on a tree stump or other support such as the branch of a tree, both need to be about three to four feet high. Now take other sticks/branches and lay them on both sides against the stick supported by the stump, forming an A-frame shape of ribs. Next, start filling in any spaces between these 'ribs' with foliage to keep any rain out. Pad the ground inside this shelter with leaves and foliage to insulate you from the cold ground. If you have them, you can also create a makeshift shelter using paracord, some duct tape, and two or three fifty-five gallon contractor bags. To do this, tie a line of paracord between two trees that are about four feet apart. You want the paracord to be about three feet off the ground. Slice a couple of bags down one of the seams and tape the two together lengthwise with the duct tape. Drape them over the paracord and weigh down the bottoms with heavy branches or rocks on both sides of the paracord to form the bags into an A-frame. Pad the ground on the inside with foliage. You can also use the bags to cover the outside foliage of the first shelter described, and again weigh either side down with heavy branches or stones.
