In Catholicism, a marriage can only be divorced by death. There is no mutual divorce possible.
But there are e few exceptions:
- if one of the persons has erred about the character of the spouse (by far the most frequently used possibility)
- the Pope can grant a divorce if the marriage hasn't been "consumed" yet
- if one spouse is not able to fulfill the obligations that a marriage brings about
- if one of the spouses has been forced into the marriage
- if the one of the spouses is unable to have sex (the actual ability to conceive children does not matter)
