Butter can last up to 6 months in the refrigerator. The best way to tell if butter is rancid is use your sense of smell. If it smells ok, but you're still not sure, taste a little bit from the inside of the block.

Hi - I only accessed this question as I have just tried some butter I had in the fridge. It is now Sunday 14th June 2009. It was "Tesco Value unsalted butter which states"Display until 12:12:2008 Best Before 19:12:2008". I was going to chuck it in the bin but then (as I has some fresh bread I got this morning) I decided to spread some of it on a crusty slice and see if it actually tasted really rancid. Amazing - it tasted fine and I ate the whole slice. Don't know what this means apart from butter lasts a whole lot longer than you think without freezing.
