Circumcision can generally be completely with general anesthesia in 15 to 20 minutes. However keep in mind that circumcision is generally not covered by most health insurances plans when it is not a medically necessary procedure. General anesthesia requires the presence of an anesthesiology in addition to the doctor performing the surgery.
For babies, generally no (unless you count a few drops of wine given to the baby to calm him down). For older children and adults, the patient is ALWAYS circumcised in a hospital under general anesthesia.
The risks are the same as when a woman is not pregnant. I don't know any risks related toward the baby. You can do local anesthesia instead, to reduce the risks of general anesthesia.
Certain risks such as pulmonary aspiration and failed intubation. The baby may also be affected but the effect is generally mild if delivery occurs within 10 minutes after anesthesia is administered.
Mother is usually given local anesthesia during delivery. The drug is injected in the space around the spinal cord. It hardly spreads during the operation. Baby does not get any problem in that case. Some times the mother has to be given general anesthesia during the pregnancy. The baby also get the effect of anesthesia and recovers with the mother. Usually the safe drugs are used to do the procedure. At times the mother has to be given general anesthesia in the emergency and the baby also gets the dose of the drug. The anesthetist will manage the baby after delivery. At times the drugs may be risky. But the risk has to be taken to save the life of the mother. If the mother survives, then only the baby in the womb will survive.
Circumcision is not covered by health insurance as it is not a medically necessary procedure so you will have to pay for the full cost yourself out of pocket. Circumcision with general anesthesia, which is required for the circumcision of a six month old, should cost between $2000 and $3000. This includes the doctor performing the procedure and the anesthesiologist. Circumcision of adults is less expensive, as only local anesthesia can be used. Circumcision has no known medical benefit, and most doctors recommend against routine infant circumcision. Circumcision, like all surgeries, has risks of adverse medical events including surgical error, prolonged bleeding, infection, and pain. A permanent decrease in penile sensitivity and sexual pleasure is also common since circumcision removes the foreskin, which protects the sensitive glans (head) of the penis. Circumcision is extremely rare in the world outside the United States, and even within the United States, the circumcision rate has dropped by more than half. In 1980 over 80% of newborns in the United States were circumcised while in 2007 less than 40% of infants were circumcised.
Anesthesia wasn't always available, and it was thought the baby's nerves aren't fully developed enough to feel REAL pain. This isn't true, since I've read stories about the Jewish Bris, where babies have "screamed their lungs out." ALL surgeries have risks, but I think it's barbaric in inhumane to NOT use anethesia! The reason baby's are doe without anesthesia is because it can be dangerous to them. Doctors realise that circumcision is a beastly and barbaric pastime and I doubt that doctors that would lower themselves to doing this really care. it is done to baby's because the trauma helps them forget or at least keep the extreme pain submerged in the subconscious. It is the most painful thing that can be done to a child, they are just not in a position to do anything about it when they are strapped down.
Ask the doctor.
Yes, just like with an surgical procedure there are risks of negative outcomes following circumcision. The risks include complications from anesthesia as well as prolonged bleeding, infection, and surgical error. While it is very uncommon, every year infants die due to complications for circumcision. Circumcision can be practiced for religious reasons, for example within Judaism and Islam. However, no major medical associate recommends routine infant circumcision as it has no known medical benefit and puts the boy at risk of complications and adverse events.
For a baby: Most pediatricians or OB/GYNs can perform a circumcision. For and adult: A urologist is the doctor to consult.
