The most common reason that figs fail to ripen is because of stress (lack of adequate water, etc.). Another reason is that the tree itself is lacking nutrients and therefore conserving what it has. A third reason could be pests and disease.

You can as long as they are fully mature. Place them in a dark,dry, well ventilated place. I like to put them in brown paper bags in a cabinet. Check on them every few days and remove them as they ripen, and remove any that may start to rot.

The analogy is time and patience. In order to visit family, they had to wait for the fruits/flowers to ripen/bloom.
If the figs are forming but not ripening then try watering with some high potash fertiliser according to instructions on the packet. If the figs are not forming properly check watering from the earliest growth and assist pollination.
