It depends on why you're taking it. It will digest in the stomach within 15-30 minutes and starts taking effect within 1-2 hours. If you are treating a severe condition, however, it may take a day or two to start noticing significant results.

100mg of Prednisone daily is alot of Prednisone. I would speak to your doctor thoroughly before taking that much. If it's needed, I wouldn't stay on it for very long. Prednisone can be toxic in high doses; and, can cause steroidal psychosis. Google it. A friend of mine was on 100mg daily for a few months and he ended up baracading himself in his bedroom because he was halucinating. They had to come and get him, and take him to the hospital. At first, they didn't know what was wrong with him and they were about to send him to a mental hospital. He then got it together enough to tell them he was on 100mg prednisone daily - and then they figured it out. He had to be sedated and stay in the hospital for 1 week.

I'm not saying Prednisone is bad, or that if you take a high dose you are immediately going to go through what my friend did. Just talk at length with your doctor, know the side effects and warning signs. And...

It is very important to lower the dose gradually before stopping treatment. You should NEVER stop this daily medication without medical supervision. But, typically, you should reduce your dosage by 5 mg every 2 weeks.

You can take it as long as your doctor prescribes it. However, the longer you take it, the more side effects you get, such as puffiness (especially in the face) and digestive upset.
