It is not a matter of how long kiwis stay with their babies, but of how long the young are able to stay with the parents.

Depending on the species, kiwi chicks are old enough to leave the parents' territory when they are 4-6 weeks old. Southern Tokoeka may stay with the parent for up to 5 years.

Depending on the species, kiwi chicks are old enough to leave the parents' territory when they are 4-6 weeks old, but they are not considered mature adults until they are around 18 months old. (Southern Tokoeka may stay with the parent for up to 5 years.) Unlike their nocturnal parents, the chicks feed both day and night, making them more susceptible to predators, and for this reason, most kiwi chicks never reach adulthood.

The mother kiwi and father kiwi both share incubation of the kiwi egg, which takes at least 70 days. After that, the chick is virtually on its own, because it can fend for itself within a few days of hatching. The chick will stay in its parents' territory for around 4 to 6 weeks (up to 5 years for the Southern Tokoeka), but the mother bird does not care for it during this time.

It depends on what is meant by "adult". Depending on the species, chicks are old enough to leave the parents' territory when they are 4-6 weeks old. (Southern Tokoeka may stay with the parent for up to 5 years.) However, they are not ready to reproduce until they are 3-5 years old for females, and after 18 months for males.
