Kittens can make vocal noise as soon as they are born. Newborn kittens will usually squeak, and their voices will get stronger as they get older and bigger.

Kittens are cats, just ones that aren't full-grown yet. I would call a cat that's less than a year old a kitten.

Our 8 week old kitten purred when it was adopted and was pet but now only purrs when around the other older female cat why wont it purr for us anymore?

Cats/Kittens do not only purr when they are happy, they also purr when they are bored, annoyed or angry so your kitten might not actually like the cat. But as to why your kitten does not purr to you I do not really know. Some kittens have such a soft purr you can not hear it unless you feel its throat. But it may just not feel affectionate, try putting your kitten in a nice sunny spot and then pet it, you never know! Is the kitten a male/ has it been neutered. you older cat might have been in heat and now it is not.

What cats can purr?

Cats learn to purr from their mothers when they are little and nursing. While the kitten is nursing the mother cat purrs as a comforting sign for the kittens. It also helps them find their mother while their eyes are still closed (first 2 weeks). If the kitten is taken away or abandoned by their mother the kitten may lose its ability to purr. I have a cat that was taken away too soon and it doesn't purr. SAD!

Does a cat purring have 20 decibels?

This varies from cat to cat. I have had cats that don't purr at all and some that purr quite loudly. I would not be surprised if my current kitten purred at least 20 dB.

Of course! It really doesn't take long for the kitten to distinguish its owner from other humans.

Is a kitten a best pet for a 9 year old?

As long as they do not want a dog, they can take care of the kitten and understand what they can not do with the kitten, sure buy them a kitten. If they can't, or as most kids say "I forgot" when they don't take responsibility. Buy them a fish if there is ANY doubt.
