According to some research, if you are on a fad diet for a week, your body will then notice that, it will notice that you are not giving it the amount of calories your body is used to getting, and unfortunatelly for all people out there who do 1000kcal per day and alike,your body will switch to a starvation mode,after about 7days. What that means is that your body is assuming that arrived some diffucult time, the food source is scarce and you have to start putting aside some fat ( ther is some anology with cavemen in winter months ). The fact is that your body values your fat more than your muscles, presummably because 1gram of fat gives you 9kcal, whereas 1 gram of carbs or protein only 4kcal worth of energy. kcal = energy. So it makes sense to preserve your fat, which will keep you warmer and alive for longer ( that's my guess ).

So to summarise - after just a week your body will start eating your muscles.

But there is sth you can do to stop that. Every 5 or 7 days have "a cheat day" = eat what you want, I mean not to go crazy, just to fill full, don't count calories. This will help to trick your body that everything is ok, you are not starving. Just do some exercises on this day, and the day after as well, and you can resume your lower calories diet. The more exercise you do the day after your cheat day, the better it is to loose fat. In fact you will loose more incorporating a cheat day, than without it. The day after your cheat day can be your fast day, but you NEED to drink plenty water and NEED to take some protein shake like whey protein and BCAA - branched chain amino acids. This will create a big caloric deficyt between your cheat and fast day, and you should loose some fat, instead of storing it while starving = fad dieting for days in a row
