Since the 20th Constitutional amendment was passed in 1933, the Presidential inauguration is held on January 20th of the year after the election.
In the USA, it apparently takes 20 months to choose and elect a president for a 48 month term.

However, if they take the office of President in the third or fourth year of the term, they may then be elected for two four year terms, thus being able to hold the office for a total of ten years.
