The largemouth is a tremendous fighter, with hard runs and leaps. But it depends on many factors. One, how cold is the water? In colder water, bass, being cold blooded like all fish, tend to be more sluggish than in warmer water. Two, the size of the fish. Big bass pull harder than smaller ones normally. Three, the reel and rod and line strength. Baitcasting reels have more reeling power than spinning reels, and the line test in pounds also determines the time involved. With eight pound test, for instance, have the drag looser to allow the fish to tire itself out. Heavier line will usually make it tougher for the fish to break the line and escape.

Use the right equiptment, and most fish can be boated after a minute or two.

Bass mature at different rates. Males can spawn at three years of age, females four. Females of five years are around 19-22 iches long and weigh between five and seven pounds. Males that age are 15-17 inches long, and weigh 2-3 pounds. The largest male largemouth ever documented was "Bad Leroy Brown", a fish caught by professional Bass angler Tom Mann, and kept in a giant aquarium with other fish in Mann's Tackle store in Alabama. At his death, Leroy weighed seven pounds.

What is a drag rating on a fishing reel?

The drag rating on reels vary from lower to higher lbs. The heavier the drag rating, the bigger the species of fish you can target. For example, most bass reels have a drag rating of 10-17 lbs. Offshore and deep sea reels will be much higher. If you have a reel with 17lb drag rating, you can tighten the drag all the way and it should take 17lbs of line pull before the reel starts to release line.
