Don't know whether it's the same issue or not, but I've got a 1999 Sonata and there was a factory recall for the airbag sensor. The defective sensor was causing the "airbag" light to stay lit constantly. I was told to take the car to the nearest dealer and they would replace the sensor with a good one although I never did.
BAD SENSOR BE CAREFUL SENSOR CAN MAKE AIRBAG DEPLOY It means there is a problem with the SRS. WARNING: This is not a DIY repair. Take it to a professional and have it repaired.

Hi, the faulty part is called a clock spring and it is located inside the steering column. It is a device that allows the steering wheel to be turned without losing electrical contact with the airbag sensor in the steering wheel. Do not try to replace it yourself, take it to the garage, but do have it replaced as your airbag is likely non-functional. Ray
Take it to the dealership.... Its real simple take the car jack it up take off the housing cover where the oxygen sensor is at then un plug the sensor, and replace...
to replace the airbag you have to remove most of the dash componets. its better just to take it to your local ford house of certified mechanic
