It can take longer to root if you have it placed in a cool area. there are a couple of things to check. Is the seed smaill tip up and the large end down toching the water? Has the seed craked open to look like there are actullaly two halves touching in only the middle? Is the seed a creamy color or dark and bittle or slimey? If the seed had turned dark, smelly or brittle, it has spolied and will not root. If you have it upside down, just flip it and put the large end into the water, only halfway please. If it is still a craam color, move it to a warmer area and wait a bit llonger. If it looks split, the root should extend into the water and a top shoot will follow soon. Good luck!

Can a potato form new roots I still need more information for my science project.?

It sure can. All you need is a potato, four toothpicks, and a glass of water. The toothpicks are arranged in the potato in such a manner as to support it on the rim of the glass ... half of the potato is submerged in water, the other half remains dry. Soon, new roots will appear in the submerged parts.
