Women and men with chlamydia should be retested about three months after treatment of an initial infection, regardless of whether they believe that their sex partners were successfully treated.
When can you prove you're cured by getting retested?
Because of the way that the most commonly-used chlamydia tests work, your test will still be positive for up to three weeks after treatment, even if you are not contagious. However, the CDC does not recommend immediate retesting to prove the treatment worked; treatment is effective enough that test of cure is not needed. However, retesting to check for reinfection, as noted above, is recommended for all patients, regardless of treatment.
Chlamydia can stay in your system for seven days after the single-dose treatment, or during the seven days required for other treatment. You should abstain from oral, anal, and vaginal sex during this time so you are not reinfected.

∙ 10y agoChlamydia is curable no matter how long you've had it, although damage caused by chlamydia will not be reversed by treatment. You should get treated for chlamydia as soon as you know you're infected.

∙ 10y agoHow long the medicine remains in your system depends on the medicine. But usually, patients who ask this question are asking if it's OK if they had sex before seven days had passed since both partners were treated. It's not OK -- if you did this, you need to repeat treatment.

∙ 6y agoChlamydia does not go away without treatment. Untreated, women frequently develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can cause infertility (not being able to get pregnant), chronic pelvic pain, tubal pregnancies, and the continued spread of the disease. In men, untreated chlamydia can cause urethral infection and complications such as swollen and tender testicles.
