For a very, very long time. If you want to test it to see if it would work for your purposes, try adding vinegar or lemon juice to a sample. See if its effervescence is vibrant and lively, and if it is not, if it is dull and sullen, then just discard that crap and buy a new one.

In an airtight container so it won't absorb any odors. You can leave it in the box and put the box in a canister that closes tightly. Or transfer the baking soda to a glass jar with a lid.
