If you take good care of it, it should last quite a long time. I've had my wii system since 2008 and it's still functional. If you want it to last longer you should NOT do the following (please add to if I missed anythign):
- Spill any liquids on it (getting an electronic wet is one of the fastest ways to break it)
- Drop it (the second fastest way to break it- unless, of course, when you dropped it you were close to the ground)
- Drop something heavy onto it
- Jam any objects that are not a Wii disk into the disk slot (not even DVDs or CDs)
- Generally misuse it
Most of these are common sense. You can play it for a long time (many hours in a row) and it won't explode (there's a fan in the back that prevents it from overheating). Just treat it as any normal large electronic. Like your computer.
