Typically a patient will need to stay at the hospital for one night post surgery. Full recovery from the surgery can take about a week, sometimes more, depending upon a patients age and if they undergo a full or partial thyroidectomy.

∙ 9y agoA partial or full removal of the thyroid gland can take anywhere from two to five hours in the surgery room. Therefore, you will more than likely stay at the hospital for one night. Depending upon your health history, and how you recover from the surgery, you might need to stay an additional night.
After being discharged from the hospital, typically you will be asked to not lift anything heavier than 10 to 15 pounds for one week. You might also be advised to not drive for a few days post surgery. If you regularly exercise, you will be asked to keep your activity at a low to moderate level, such as walking, for a week or two.
Within a couple days of discharge from the hospital you will have some follow up visits with your surgeon. This will include review of how the scar is healing, as well as discussing how you are feeling post surgery. If available, you might also discuss the results from the pathology report.

There are three main types of surgical thyroid cancer treatments. In the first type of surgery, called a lobectomy, a surgeon removes just one of the thyroid's lobes.
