It was known as such since the Aztecs founded their capital Mexico-Tenochtitlan on March 13, 1325 -- in fact, they were known as the Mexica people, not Aztec. After their anihilation at the hands of Spanish conquistadors in August 13, 1521 the whole territory -- not only the Aztec Empire -- became an overseas territory of the Spanish Empire, known as the Viceroyalty of the New Spain. When Mexico won its independence war against Spain in 1821, it then officially became the United Mexican States, but is widely known as Mexico ever since.
