Stephen Harper was 'elected' Prime Minister on the 2006 January 23rd and 2008 October 14th federal elections.

Stephen Harper led the Conservatives to victory in the 2006 January 23rd election. This led to Harper becoming the 22th Prime Minister of Canada, presiding over a minority government, on 2006 February 6.

Stephen Harper was elected as MP for Calgary West as a member of the Reform Party in 1993, and served until 1997.
He was elected the leader of the Alliance Party (successor to the Reform Party) in 2002, and was elected as MP for Calgary Southwest that same year, which he has been ever since (as of July 2010).

In 2003 the Alliance Party merged with the Progressive Conservative Party to form the Conservative Party of Canada, and in 2004, Harper was elected the leader of that party.

Harper was appointed as Prime Minister by the Governor General on February 6, 2006 after the 2006 general election because his party had more seats in the House of Commons than any other.
