The White House was under construction from 1792 to 1800. The first president to move in was Thomas Jefferson in 1801. During the War of 1812, the White House was set on fire by the British, and had to be reconstructed.

The Executive Mansion (known after 1815 as the White House) was first completed in 1800, and President John Adams moved in on November 1, 1800.

It was rebuilt after the War of 1812 and extensive remodeled over the last 200 years.

The question should read: How many years has the White House stood? And the answer is 1792 by Irish architect James Hoban. the white house wasnt always white. it was gray. but after there was a fire at the gray white house, it was black. but god forbid we have a black white house, so they painted/plastered it white. ;)

It has been lived in since November, 1800. It was burned in 1814 and had to be redone and there have been large-scale renovations from time to time ,but every president since 1800 has liived in White House for at least part of time in office.
