Religiously motivated violence has probably been going on since different religions first came intgo contact, but certainly since the advent of Christianity. At first, Christians were the victims of sporadic and generally low-level violence and very occasional official persecution, chiefly in the period 305-311 CE. Subsequently, Christianity perpetrated large scale violence against non-believers and even against Christians who worshipped in a different way to the majority. The rise of Islam introduced a new dimension, although Islamic conquests were more frequently motivated by acquisition of land and wealth. However, the crusades of the Middle Ages and the extremist jihad of modern times are examples of how the clash of religion can result in violence.
