Small cakes like those known as cupcakes have been baked since at least the late eighteenth century. The word cupcake itself has been documented to early to mid nineteenth century, but was probably in use earlier.
Cupcakes originally were made in small clay pots. It wasn't until 1918 that they mass produced disposable cupcake paper cups. The pots baked faster than a whole cake, and the outcome was more desirable. Before 'cupcakes', normal cakes took hours to cook and would normally be very burnt on the edges and not at all cooked in the middle.
They were at first given the name because they were just cakes baked in small cups. n the early 19th century, there were two different uses for the name cup cake or cupcake. In previous centuries, before muffin tins were widely available, the cakes were often baked in individual pottery cups, or molds and took their name from the cups they were baked in. This is the use of the name that has persisted, and the name of "cupcake" is now given to any small cake that is about the size of a teacup.
Cupcakes were invented between the late 1800's and the early 1900's. And there still yummy!
Nobody knows when the first cupcake was really invented. But there are sources that say Megan Baumgardner was the very first person to try in 1742.
